PDRN

What is PDRN?
PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a purified fragment of DNA, most often sourced from salmon. Because it closely resembles human DNA, your skin recognises it as familiar rather than foreign. It's loved as a gentle repair-and-support ingredient — and a well-formulated PDRN product shouldn't smell like fish.
How does it actually work on your skin?
PDRN activates A2A adenosine receptors in your skin — think of these as an internal "repair mode" switch. Once triggered, your skin produces more collagen and elastin, reduces inflammation, and accelerates cell renewal. It also supplies raw DNA building blocks that damaged cells use to fix themselves, especially after UV exposure or harsh treatments.
Does it really come from salmon?
Yes — the DNA is extracted from salmon (and trout), chosen because it closely resembles human DNA, so your skin recognises it. The raw material goes through high-temperature extraction, purification, and sterilisation, leaving a 95%+ pure active. The fish are sourced from sustainable aquaculture, not wild-caught. Prefer to avoid fish entirely? There's a ginseng-derived vegan version.
Is it safe?
Yes. 95%+ pure after processing. All proteins and peptides that could trigger immune reactions are removed during high-temperature extraction.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
Yes. Gentler than retinol or AHAs — no purging, no peeling, no irritation. Commonly used post-procedure on reactive and sensitive skin types.
Are there any side effects?
Topical PDRN is extremely well tolerated. In rare cases, very sensitive skin may experience mild redness — temporary and uncommon.
Does it smell like fish?
No. Purification removes all organic compounds that cause odor. A fishy smell is a formulation problem — not a PDRN problem.
Will it change my DNA?
No. PDRN provides raw building blocks for cellular repair — it does not integrate into your genome. Your DNA is completely safe.
Is there a vegan version?
Traditional PDRN is salmon-derived. Ginseng-derived PDRN (plant-based) activates the same receptors and is the strongest vegan alternative.
I have a fish allergy. Can I still use it?
PDRN is processed to 95%+ purity — all proteins that trigger allergic reactions are removed during high-temperature extraction. If you have a severe allergy, consult your dermatologist before starting.
Can I use it if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Limited research in this group. Consult your doctor before adding PDRN to your routine.
Who should be cautious about using PDRN?
Use extra caution — and check with a professional first — if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have active acne or open wounds (PDRN isn't a spot treatment), have an autoimmune condition, or have a severe fish allergy (choose the ginseng-derived version).
Can I use it every day?
Yes. Morning, evening, or both. No frequency limit — it's that gentle.
Where does PDRN go in my skincare routine?
Apply it after cleansing and toning, and after any active serums (vitamin C, niacinamide, etc.), but before your moisturizer. It plays well with almost everything and won't compete with your other actives. Morning, evening, or both — all fine.
Can I use it with retinol, vitamin C, or AHAs?
Yes — and it's a great pairing. Retinol speeds up cell turnover but can irritate; PDRN repairs and calms, making it an ideal buffer. Vitamin C brightens; PDRN supports the barrier that keeps those results locked in. AHAs exfoliate; PDRN helps skin recover faster. Think of PDRN as the ingredient that makes everything else work better and feel gentler.
What skin concerns does it actually help with?
PDRN is genuinely versatile. It targets the look of fine lines and loss of firmness, dullness and dark spots, redness and sensitivity, dehydrated or compromised barriers, and the appearance of acne scars and under-eye circles. It's also a favourite for recovery after lasers or peels — if your skin is going through something, PDRN helps it bounce back.
How long before I see results?
PDRN works at a cellular level — it's a slow-burn ingredient, not an overnight fix. Most people notice better hydration and a calmer complexion within 2–4 weeks. More meaningful changes like improved firmness and softer-looking fine lines typically show up after 8–12 weeks of consistent use. Consistency is everything.
Does the science actually back it up?
More than most trendy ingredients. PDRN has decades of clinical use in medicine — wound healing, burn recovery, and post-surgical repair — plus a growing body of skincare research. The evidence is strongest for injectable, in-clinic use; topical studies are fewer but promising. It's an ingredient with real scientific history behind it, not hype.
What's the difference between topical and injectable PDRN?
Injectables penetrate deeper and work faster. Topicals are slower but effective for at-home use — especially with microneedling.
How is PDRN different from retinol?
Retinol works by forcing skin to turn over faster — effective, but often irritating. PDRN works differently: it supports the skin's own repair pathways from within, with no purging or peeling. Retinol is a 'push' ingredient; PDRN is a 'heal' ingredient. Many people use both — retinol for results, PDRN to buffer the irritation and speed recovery.
How does PDRN compare to hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid hydrates by attracting and holding water — it's a humectant. PDRN works at a cellular level to repair and support skin over time. They do completely different jobs, which is why they pair so well; many products combine both, so PDRN repairs while HA keeps skin plump and hydrated.
